Engineering infrastructure

The key principles for construction of the engineering infrastructure of Akademia City are safety, modernity and preservation of environment.

Energy supply of the district is to be based on cogeneration (simultaneous production of heat and electricity). By the time the construction has been completed, Akademia City will consume 200-250 MW of electricity and about 2000 MW of heat power. These amounts are to be produced at cogeneration facilities situated near Akademia City. This solution will rule out the risk of energy resources shortage in the Sverdlovsk Region and increase the energy safety of Yekaterinburg, especially at the time of peak loads. This in turn will guarantee the uninterrupted service of the whole energy system of the district. Besides, gas turbines will allow to use natural gas as the cleanest kind of fuel for heat and electricity generation.

The utilities of Akademia City will be comprised of over 10 km of water pipe-line (Ø1000 mm), minimum 20 km of heating main (Ø 1000 mm), as well as 3 km of reconstructed gas main (Ø 700 mm, 12 MPa) and 20 km of sewage network..

At present, more than 3,5 km of main water pipe-line have been built. The water pipe-line made of fiberglass (the safest and most advanced material) will be completed in 2007. Its warranty period is more than 50 years. Use of fiberglass will solve the problem of water pollution, because this technology excludes pollution of water on its way from the filter station to the end-users.

Efficiency is another key characteristic of the district’s engineering infrastructure. Its heating system will be a closed one, which will help to avoid ineffective use of water resources when large amounts of well-prepared water are pumped, heated and distributed in the pipes, but do not remain in a closed system and are actually wasted. In Akademia City, water will be heated in heat-exchangers located directly in houses, while water and heat supply systems will be different from those currently used by the communal services: horizontal dissection will make it possible to count heat and electricity consumed by every flat.

These innovations will help the district inhabitants to save on communal services, as the district engineering infrastructure is guaranteed against waste and drains, and households will only pay for the actually consumed resources.
